After these videos are uploaded, the whole cycle restarts. The whole premise of this account is to encourage people to drink, do something stupid, take a video and then send it in to the aforementioned account so it gets “approved” and posted on Instagram. Shaping Youth recently did a study proving that being exposed to accounts like these can increase kids chances of underage drinking by almost 30 percent : almost half of the nation’s viewers.įor example, Total Frat Move, with their primary demographic being adolescent boys, posts daily videos of boys funneling beers on wakeboards, breaking down doors on motorcycles, puking their guts out after drinking too much at a party and other raucous act. Social media accounts like Total Frat Move and Barstool Sports have a huge influence on underage drinking in adolescents by the videos they publicize. Our whole lives basically revolve around what we see on our screens, and that’s why it’s time we start being more cautious about what we see on our screens. I mean, let’s be honest we’ve all been caught trying to mimic the fashion trends our favorite brands have posted, or attempting a recipe we drooled over on Buzzfeed Tasty. Part of me hopes it's still in the library, but the other part knows I'll never see it again. No one can deny the fact that social media plays a huge role in the lives of young people. ![]() Each person who read my copy signed the front cover. It was surprisingly helpful at facilitating conversations surrounding expectations for behavior and general views on what fraternity means. We asked our new members to read it year after year, and we'd always have a lively discussion afterward. It's filled with great one-liners, hilarious pranks, memorable scenes, and reads like it was written by a humorist from days long past. The messiah in spite of all of this is W.R. On the other end, TFM presented a well-packaged, easily accessible stereotype for the left to prey upon (and, later, to become 'triggered' by). With a community like TFM glorifying some of the most raucous behavior, kids were encouraged to one-up each other and act even more brazenly out of character. On one hand, people who selected schools due to greek life generally would become disproportionately irate when colleges started clamping down on excess partying. Also, it caused the scene to become more polarizing. When you think about it, when the site first reached prominence, it definitely did cause more people to not only to become more curious greek life, but to more seriously factor in the greek scene when selecting colleges. In my lifetime, I believe we will see the complete demise of the system. I have heard the argument that the proliferation of TFM indirectly contributed to the now hopelessly unrecoverable reputation of greek life as a whole. Using the word coed makes me feel old, but it's a label I'm willing to accept in proclaiming that the website is not winning any awards for the quality of writing. Through and through, it's garbage supported by daily features of hot coeds. I read the TFM website for at least a year before college, and occasionally access it even now. The connotation that greek life now carries with it ensures that this book and this brand of humor will be remembered as a footnote. ![]() At the time, it seemed like the next logical step for the evolution of mainstream college humor, but in retrospect that's just a silly thing to say. I read this in an afternoon during my freshman year of college.
